What new parents need to know

October 11th, 2010

I was asked the question, “What advice would you give to a new parent?”

Aside from the usual get some sleep and get more take-out food, just remember Love and Laughter:

* Hugs along the way.

Don’t let your moods keep people away. Instead of “leave me alone”, you need a touch of affection.

You may not always feel like giving a hug, but do it anyway. Hug your husband often; hug your baby often; hug everyone!

We are made for love and affection. The more you get, the better you will feel.

* Laugh your way through.

When the baby has diarrhea all night, or vomits all over your hair, or screams nonstop for 2 hours (yes, I’ve been through all that, and more), take a deep breath, and crack a smile.

Remember, you wanted this baby, you love this baby, and if it comes down to it, you’d give your life for this baby. So enjoy the baby, no matter when he/she puts you through.

Keep a sense of humor, see the ridiculous in the situation, laugh and go along for the ride. It’s much better than screaming.

The daily chores and worries of a new parent are many. Love and Laughter will get you through triumphantly.
