Say Yes

August 22nd, 2007

“Can I build a tent in the living room?”

Sure!

“Can I paint Pokemons on the walls of my room?

Go for it!

“Can I have peanut butter and jelly sandwich for dinner?

Why not!

When my children asked me for permission to do things that are not dangerous, unethical, or immoral, I try as much as possible to say “Yes.” Even though their requests may be annoying, and stupid…well, you are not them and you are not a kid. When we were kids, we probably wanted to do the same things. Allow your children to live their childhood and save your “No’s” for issues that really matter.

“Can I go stay out till midnight with my friends?”

No!

“Can I spend the weekend with a bunch of my friends?”

No Way!

“Can I skip class today and go skiing?”

Absolutely Not!
