Living up to their names

October 27th, 2010 / 4 Comments

When we were expecting parents, my husband and I constantly studied the name book to find appropriate names for our children. We wanted names that not only sounded nice, but also had meanings that we hope would reflect positive character traits in our children.

Our son’s name means “man of God”. It’s a form of the name Elijah. Our two daughters names mean “bold and courageous”, and “dearly loved.” It is our desire that our children will grow into their names.

So as our children were growing up, I would occasionally remind them of the meaning of their names, and why we chose them.  Whenever I see them displaying the characteristic of their names, I would affirm them. “You are so courageous, you are living up to your name!” I’ve said that to my daughter numerous times.

I wanted my children to know that their names are not just a way to get their attention. Their names can reflect their character.

And so far, they are doing well in living up to their names.

  1. Katy,
I enjoyed this. We took special care in chossing our children’s names as well. Thank you for the encouragement to remind them of their special meanings and to affirm them as they grow those characteristics. Blessings…

  2. Traci, thanks for coming by and commenting. I hope you are are doing well!

  3. I would hate to be given a name that had little thought behind it or worse get a strange one to satisfy someone’s vanity. One’s name will certainly affect how you grow up.

  4. Michael, you’re right, I didn’t think of the negative side. If your child’s name does not have a positive meaning, this post doesn’t apply!!
