Prom precaution

limo

It’s about prom time – do you dread it or do you enjoy it?

I survived the ordeal when my daughter went with a group of friends to her prom last year. I didn’t wait up all night worrying. I give that job to my husband.

As parents we always worry about practical concerns of safety when our children go out.

Some people may think we are overly protective but I have good reason to be cautious. Let me tell you what happened to my friend’s daughter Julie last year (not her real name).

When the prom ended, Julie and her friends were waiting outside for their limo ride home. After watching their friends leave one by one, their limo still hasn’t shown up. Finally, the limo drives up, and Julie and her group excitedly climbed into the limo. One look at the driver and Julie told her friends to get out of the car. They approached the school principal who was fortunately still on the curb making sure the students were going home. The principal went to talk to the limo driver and told him Julie and her friends will not be riding with him.

What happened? The driver was stoned! Julie was sharp enough to see something was amiss. The principal verified it, took down the license plate of the limo, and called the CHP. He ended up taking Julie and her friends home.

So don’t let anyone tell you that you are overprotective. Tell your children to talk to the limo driver before they get into the car. Anytime they sense something is not right, don’t be afraid to speak up, even if it may seem ridiculous or embarrassing. It’s usually right to trust their instincts.

  1. Came across your site looking for interesting blogs on prom.
Wonder if what happens in the States is a shadow of things to come in the UK. Prom is relatively recent here – probably the last ten or twenty years – so we don’t have the “horror” stories about what can go wrong circulating yet.
I guess that our schools are also much smaller, so proms are an entirely different kind of affair anyway.

  2. Thank you for such a timely message. Today is my first visit to your blog and I am enjoying it so much! Our first prom will be this Saturday and I am encouraged to stand guard over my flock! I am looking forward to reading the effective discipline series.

  3. Jen: I am afraid proms in the U.S. probably doesn’t set a very good example, at least not from what I’ve seen.

Joyce: Let us know how the prom turns out! You will sure have some good stories!

  5. Ok I was not worried until I read your story! 🙂 . I am just going to let her do her thing and enjoy one of good times in her life.
